Aretha Franklin not only was a good singer (the self-proclaimed Queen of Soul), but she was prophetic. In 1985, she co-wrote and recorded, "Who's Zoomin' Who?"

And 35 years later, that was the question as people used Zoom to work from home in a pandemic that brought the economy to an abrupt halt.

Now Aretha meant who was checking out whom, but today's work-from-home crowd use Zoom to hold meetings, do TV shows, plot the downfall of civilization, and other important stuff.

And people like it.

You can work from home. Instead of spending 40 hours a week putting in facetime, you can do the 5 hours of work you actually do from the comfort of your living room.

This Zoom economy was supposed to be temporary.

Then again, that pandemic shutdown was supposed to last only two weeks.

Anders Melin and Misyrlena Egkolfopoulou at Bloomberg reported, "Employees Are Quitting Instead of Giving Up Working From Home. The drive to get people back into offices is clashing with workers who’ve embraced remote work as the new normal."

Good for them.

Work sucks.

I can blog from anywhere in the world, and indeed 4 years ago I blogged from the other side of the world. Readers did not know because I did not tell them. It was unimportant.

Why not let office workers do the same thing?

The Bloomberg story began, "A six-minute meeting drove Portia Twidt to quit her job.

"She’d taken the position as a research compliance specialist in February, enticed by promises of remote work. Then came the prodding to go into the office. Meeting invites piled up.

"The final straw came a few weeks ago: the request for an in-person gathering, scheduled for all of 360 seconds. Twidt got dressed, dropped her two kids at daycare, drove to the office, had the brief chat and decided she was done."

Twidt's plight begs Deanna Carter's musical question, "Did I Shave My Legs For This?" 

Bosses suffer the delusion that they own you. It is odd that salaried people are expected to show up every day and clock in 8 hours or more.

And that 6 minute meeting was a dick move. They could have done it by Zoom.

Bloomberg offered another anecdote.

The story said, "Jimme Hendrix, a 30-year-old software developer in the Netherlands, quit his job in December as the web-application company he worked for was gearing up to bring employees back to the office in February."

The covid shutdown spoiled him.

The story said, "Now he does freelance work and helps his girlfriend grow her art business. He used to spend two hours each day commuting; now the couple is considering selling their car and instead relying on bikes."

People are getting their lives back. They can enjoy quiet mornings or afternoons, scheduling work for when they want to work. It is quite a lot like me in retirement.

Johnny Paycheck had the right idea 44 years ago when he recorded the David Allan Coe song, "Take This Job and Shove It."

We now have the technology to make that possible.
