To be fair, the plan is to give the Congressional Gold Medal to all 2,200-plus officers in the Capitol Police and the 3,800-plus officers in the D.C. Police Department.

But if life were fair, Ashli Babbitt would still be alive because there was no reason to shoot and kill her. She was unarmed and posed no other threat to anyone.

Politico reported, "The House passed legislation on Tuesday that would award the highest congressional honor to all members of law enforcement for their service during the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, with 21 Republicans voting against it.

"The chamber previously passed a measure in March that would have bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal to the Capitol Police and the D.C. Police Department. But the measure ran into headwinds in the Senate, which had separately honored Officer Eugene Goodman of the Capitol Police, who gained public acclaim for his heroism on Jan. 6 protecting lawmakers and their staff during the insurrection led by former President Donald Trump’s supporters."

Insurrection?

Really?

If true, it would be the first unarmed insurrection.

The story said, "Proponents of the House measure have argued that the honor should not go just to one person given the collective contributions made by law enforcement on Jan. 6 when rioters violently stormed the Capitol as Congress was in the process of certifying President Joe Biden’s electoral victory."

If not one person is singled out for heroics, what about the death of Miss Babbitt? Is her blood on the hands of all 6,000 officers?

The story repeatedly said insurrection but failed to mention the killing of Ashli Babbitt.

The story praised the police no end but ended with Paragraph 15, "Lawmakers have tried to walk a fine line in the wake of the insurrection, praising the actions of officers and other responders on the front line while also sharply criticizing some law enforcement leaders — several of whom have since stepped down — for their handling of the situation." 

I do not object to bestowing some honor on the Capitol Police, who do put their lives on the line every day. In 2017, 5 officers squared off with an actual gunman and were honored for it.

On November 9, 2017, the Advocate reported, "Capitol Hill lawmakers honored five officers who took down an armed attacker at a Republican congressional baseball practice in June, a shooting that left House Majority Whip Steve Scalise critically wounded.

"During the Thursday morning ceremony in the U.S. Capitol, the five officers, two of whom were themselves wounded in the June 14 attack, were repeatedly hailed as heroes who 'ran toward the threat.'

"Scalise, who spent three months in the hospital but has since returned to work, embraced the officers both before the ceremony and after they'd been given the U.S. Capitol Police's highest honor for bravery, its Medal of Honor."

A blanket Congressional Gold Medal, which would be a higher honor than that, is an overstatement that diminishes the award itself while also casting shade on real acts of heroism in 2017. 

That Babbitt's killer is rewarded is doubly wrong.

Bravo to the 21 Republicans who stood athwart the self-righteous mob in the House to say, "No."
