Republican Senator Bill Hagerty of Tennessee (that's him outside the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem) joined Ted Cruz and Lindsay Graham on a sojourn to Israel to blast Chairman Joe's Hamas-friendly foreign policy.
Politics used to end at the water's edge. But in the 21st century, Democrats ended that. Oh well. New rules, new tactics.
Hagerty is staunchly pro-Israel.
Before the trip, Hagerty said, "Americans watched in horror when Hamas and other Iran-backed terrorists in Gaza recently launched thousands of rockets at innocent men, women, and children in Israel. I’m joining Senator Cruz, my colleague on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, to visit Israel and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our allies after they endured the worst terrorist attacks in recent years because I want to see firsthand what more the U.S. can do to strengthen our vital alliance with Israel at a time when terrorists like Hamas and Hezbollah and terror-sponsoring regimes in Iran and Syria are making the Middle East more dangerous. I also want to discuss with Israeli leadership what the United States can do to maintain the momentum for peace across the region that the landmark Abraham Accords started."
In Israel, Hagerty denounced Chairman Joe's plans to give USA money to Palestinians.
Hagerty said, "We’re very concerned about any monies that go to the Gaza Strip that are, quote, intended for infrastructure to be easily diverted by Hamas, end quote. We need to avoid that at all cost…Iron Dome has done a fantastic job of protecting civilian life…I think our monies are far better spent supporting our ally and replenishing the Iron Dome."
The Iron Dome protects Israel from terrorist attacks.
Cruz said, "The enemies of Israel are the enemies of America and their enormous military benefits to the United States from our alliance, whether it is the Mossad sharing intelligence about Iran and the Ayatollah seeking to murder Americans and murder Israelis, or whether it is the incredible technological leaps and bounds that we get from missile defense that helps keep Americans safe."
Hamas terrorists fired 4,000 rockets at Israel. To complain that Israel fired back is to side with those who want to destroy Israel. To demand proportionality in response is to deny that Hamas wants Israel destroyed. To complain that Palestinian children died without mentioning that most died by Hamas rockets is to lie that Hamas cares about Palestinians.
Republicans embraced Israel in part because so many evangelical Protestants have joined the party. They see Israel as the guardian of the Holy Lands.
Democrats side with Hamas because it is backed by Iran, a regime that seeks Death to America. That is a goal that Democrats increasingly share.
