​Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican Party, gave the Commission on Presidential Debates an ultimatum: Either become impartial or Republicans will walk.

She sent them a letter on Tuesday and gave them until July 31 to respond to Republican demands.

For decades, presidential debates leaned so far left that they have fallen. Candy Crowley and Obama tag teamed Mitt Romney in the debate she moderated. Last year's debates were the last straw.

McDaniel tweeted, "The Commission on Presidential Debates’ repeated missteps & partisan actions last year make clear that it no longer provides an impartial forum. If mistakes are not corrected, the RNC will advise future Republican candidates against participating in CPD-hosted debates.

"It is inexcusable that the CPD waited to host a single debate until after the start of early voting in 8 states, absentee voting in 26 states, and uniformed/overseas voting in all 50 states.

"Additionally, the CPD undermined the conditions for a fair debate last year:

 → CPD selected a moderator that previously worked for Biden

 → 6 of the 10 CPD board members made anti-Trump comments

 → Switched second debate to a virtual format "

Good for her for pushing back. Republicans have to stop cowering before the media. Even Donald Trump sucked up to them too much for my comfort.

I hope Republicans finally end these spectacles because they are not debates. They are gotcha questions from Democrat PR men and women.

If you want a Lincoln-Douglas debate then have a Lincoln-Douglas format in which the questions are agreed on in advance, and the presidential candidates debate them, taking turns and offering rebuttals and the like.

Make it a serious examination of the issues of the day instead of a TV show.

The Republican Party also should control its primary debates. Just have the top four candidates debate once a month from September 2023 to January 2024. Five debates are plenty. No network should get an exclusive, and if the networks won't carry them, fine. C-Span will.
