Liberal Privilege was on full display this weekend when the New York Times (which I never link) whined, "Progressives’ Urgent Question: How to Win Over Voters of Color."
Lisa Lerer, a white, with help from another white, Nate Cohn, white-splained the New York City mayoral race in which the black ex-cop defeated the billionaire Asian-American, an AOC-endorsed black woman, a Hispanic, and some other people.
The column began, "Can progressives win broad numbers of the black and brown voters they say their policies will benefit most?
"That provocative question is one that a lot of Democrats find themselves asking after seeing the early results from New York City’s mayoral primary this past week."
Her question is easily answered. Progressive policies led to a skyrocketing increase in crime.
Most of the victims of that soaring crime are black or brown because most of the perps are black or brown.
But NYT argued that black and brown voters should vote liberal anyway. Lerer made the case that progressives know what is best for black people, for brown people, and for everyone. How dare people not vote for progressives!
She wrote, "In a contest that centered on crime and public safety, Eric Adams, who emerged as the leading Democrat, focused much of his message on denouncing progressive slogans and policies that he said threatened the lives of 'black and brown babies' and were being pushed by 'a lot of young, white, affluent people.' A retired police captain and Brooklyn’s borough president, he rejected calls to defund the Police Department and pledged to expand its reach in the city."
The liberal battlecry of "Defund the Police" is turning off the victims of the rising crime in New York City and every Democrat-run city.
Michael Dukakis is telling Democrats to cool it. He told The Hill that Defund the Police is nuts.
Dukakis said, "I’m saying to myself, my God, what the hell is going on here?
"On one hand, you have folks screaming and yelling about getting rid of policing, which makes no sense at all. And then on the other hand, you have some people totally misinterpreting what community policing is, just as we were really making huge progress."
As governor of Massachusetts in 1987, he let murderer Willie Horton take a weekend furlough from prison. Horton went to Oxon Hill, Maryland, where he twice raped a woman after pistol-whipping, knifing, binding, and gagging her fiancé. He shot a police officer before he was captured.
Dukakis never called that nuts. Instead, he defended his furloughs-for-felons program.
And even he believes Defund the Police is a bad campaign slogan.
Democrat voters in New York tried to save their party by nominating Adams.
Lerer of NYT wrote, "His appeal adds evidence to an emerging trend in Democratic politics: a disconnect between progressive activists and the rank-and-file black and Latino voters who they say have the most to gain from their agenda. As liberal activists orient their policies to combat white supremacy and call for racial justice, progressives are finding that many voters of color seem to think about the issues quite a bit differently."
Her column was not about the NYC mayoral race because the Times cares little about NYC. New Yorkers see it for what it is, a liberal national newspaper in the model of Horace Greeley's New York Tribune.
The Times is suffering Donald Trump withdrawal.
Lerer wrote, "In the general election, Donald J. Trump made gains with nonwhite voters, particularly Latinos, as Democrats saw a drop-off in support that cost the party key congressional seats, according to a postelection autopsy by Democratic interest groups. In the 2020 election, Mr. Trump made larger gains among all black and Latino voters than he did among white voters without a college degree, according to the Democratic data firm Catalist."
The loss of black and brown votes is why Democrats had to stuff the ballot boxes in state after state.
She wrote, "On issues beyond criminal justice, data indicates that black and Latino voters are less likely to identify as liberal than white voters."
Duh.
The victims of the Black Lives Matter crime wave are black and brown (to use Lerer's favorite term).
Progressives are trying to paper over New York's crime wave.
Lerer quoted Sochie Nnaemeka, the New York state director of the Working Families Party, who said, "Voters were offered a false dichotomy between justice and public safety by the Adams rhetoric. We worked hard to dismantle that framework, but that dog-whistling does strike the real fear that people have when our streets are increasingly unsafe. It’s a very human experience."
Ah, the dog whistle, liberalism's favorite straw musical instrument.
What Lerer left out of her analysis is that Adams is the only Democrat who could win because any of the rest of the candidates would lose to the anti-crime crusader Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. He founded the Guardian Angels to protect New Yorkers from criminals.
Most voters oppose crime. Got it? It took Dukakis 33 years, but he finally got it.
In nominating Adams, black and brown voters sent a message to party bosses to reduce crime. I doubt they can, as they lack the will and the way.
This is not white backlash. This is black and brown (to use NYT's term) backlash. This time the escape to suburbia by city dwellers is not white flight. It is black and brown flight.
Personal safety matters. Jesse Jackson said when running for president in 1984, "There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps... then turn around and see somebody white and feel relieved."
New Yorkers elected Republican Rudy Giuliani mayor and crime dropped drastically.
I will bet that Jackson has gone back to crossing the street when he sees young black men approaching him.
That is a problem for progressives. They took over the city. They installed progressive policies. Crime returned. Voters noticed.
